I met Larry at the Elsie Farmer's Market several years ago. I was interested in beekeeping and he seemed to enjoy talking about bees and beekeeping. At that time, I was just beginning to keep bees. By accident, I learned of a swarm that had taken residence in an abandoned house and asked Larry for advice. He offered to assist me in removing the swarm once he was sure I wanted the bees as well as the honey.

When we got to the house, the bees were using an entrance above the first story windows and it required getting to them while standing on ladders. Needless to say, they were not pleased about the invasion. I was completely protected, but Larry started without gloves. This hive did not allow him that luxury and soon drove him off the ladder. He stayed and directed my removal of the hive, but allowed me the honor(?) of removing the bees and honey. In spite of my efforts, the queen did not survive and the hive died in captivity.

Larry offered advice on the probable causes of the hive death and even offered me another chance to remove a second hive inside a building. However, when I looked at that hive, it was even farther up the outside and I felt that I had had enough ladder work, so I declined.
