Obituary for Virginia H. Tennant

Virginia S. Tennant died Friday, April 24, 2015 at the age of 100. She was born May 20, 1914 in Detroit, MI the daughter of Herman and Irene (Brunner) Stoyke. Virginia grew up in Bay City, MI graduating from Bay City Central HS in 1932. She moved back to Detroit and attended Wayne State University. She was a hairstylist, bank teller and nurse’s aide, also living in Dearborn, Atlanta and St. Johns, MI. Virginia was a wonderful singer and pianist, singing opera and in church choirs. She was a member of various musical organizations in the Detroit area and a founding member of the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra. Her enthusiasm for music lead her to give the seed money for the Performance Shell in St. Johns. Virginia was also an avid outdoors person enjoying golf, tennis, hiking and cross- country skiing. She enjoyed camping with her family on trips throughout the United States and then later traveling with her husband to many destinations around the world. She was also an excellent Bridge player. Virginia devoted her entire life to volunteering in many different capacities, including Lansing’s Central United Methodist Church Open Door Ministry. She enjoyed especially helping those less fortunate, making the world a better place for many, many people. Virginia also was devoted to her family, giving her children many opportunities and experiences. Her love of family was far reaching as she corresponded with grandchildren, great grandchildren and with her many nieces and nephews and their children. On May 4, 1940 she married William H. Tennant and he preceded her in death in 1991. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Irene Diehl and Katherine Scharffe. Surviving are two sons, William (Joianne) Tennant of St. Johns and James (Katherine Austin) Tennant of Auckland, New Zeeland; one daughter, Ann (Robert) Miller of Vass, NC; grandchildren, William D. Tennant, Rob Miller, Kristin (Jason Berg) Tennant, Katchen Miller, Yon (Pamela Hardy) Tennant, Nathaniel Tennant and Elani Tennant; great grandchildren, Havah Berg, Quillin Bakker and Saskia Bakker; brother-in-law, Ralph Tennant; daughter-in-law, Lesley Dawes and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol Ave. Lansing, MI with Rev. Linda Farmer-Lewis officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends 4:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, May 4 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra P.O.
